Raw Material Price for Carbide Tools

Information on raw material price for carbide tools

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen

Prices for coated and carbide tools have risen recently. We are committed to explaining this development in a transparent and clear manner.

Carbide tools are extremely hard and wear-resistant. They are usually composed of tungsten carbide grains and cobalt as a binder. Typical tools include Endmills, milling cutters and indexable inserts, which are renowned for their high precision and durability.

These tools are manufactured from special metals (tungsten with a percentage of 80% to 95%) and other components, some of which contain rare-earth elements. In these sectors, international raw material markets have been characterised by significant price fluctuations for some time.

The causes include, amongst other things, reduced export volumes from major producing countries, growing demand from industry, and general cost increases within global supply chains.

Tungsten is one of the most critical industrial metals worldwide. Its physical properties make it indispensable for hard metals, powder metallurgy, toolmaking, mechanical engineering and safety-critical applications. At the same time, the market is structurally tight and increasingly volatile. Global supply is highly concentrated. The majority of production and processing takes place in just a few regions. As a result, the market reacts extremely sensitively to political decisions, production adjustments and fluctuations in demand.

Why the price of tungsten is currently rising sharply

The current price rises are not a sudden market anomaly, but the result of several factors acting simultaneously:

Shortage of supply

Production restrictions, stricter environmental regulations and regulatory intervention have significantly reduced the available supply. At the same time, less material is reaching the open market, particularly in the case of intermediate products such as tungsten carbide powder.

Low liquidity in the market

The tungsten market is relatively modest in size. Even moderate shifts in supply or demand can trigger significant price movements within a short space of time. This also explains the sometimes sharp price surges that occur within a matter of days or weeks.

Rising demand

The demand is growing not just within a single sector, but across several industries: the tool and machine manufacturing sector, the automotive industry, the energy sector, the electronics sector, semiconductor manufacturing, and security and defence-related applications are all seeing a steady increase in demand. This broad demand is met by a supply that can only be expanded to a limited extent.

Strategic stockup

Businesses and government officials are responding to the tight supply situation by building up stockpiles and securing long-term supply contracts. This further tightens the market, which in turn increases pressure on prices.

Impact on suppliers and customers

The market for tungsten-containing powders and cemented carbides is particularly hard hit. High quality standards, strict grain size specifications and process-specific compositions cannot be changed at short notice. For us as a manufacturer, this means:

  • longer delivery times
  • less flexibility in adjusting quantities
  • rising costs throughout the entire value chain
  • greater importance of planning, stock management and partnerships

Price negotiations have increasingly shifted from short-term deals to strategic discussions about security of supply.

There is little chance of the market easing in the short term. The current conditions point to continued volatility and persistently higher price levels. The key factors will be how flexibly supply chains can be organised and how quickly market participants can respond to changes.
